Sometimes you may want to make better use of search engines like Google. This paper illustrates a lot (the excitable states, the oscillation states etc). You might also be able to crack this problem out on your own if you try to look at more resources.

I am also very curious that the course is called \”mathematical biology\”. It looks more like the non-linear and chaos theory that I\’ve learned back in college. Perhaps you focus more on applications in biological system.
